Slalom sesection and open event

Over the weekend 31st-1st April saw the Sluice weir in St Catherines park, Lucan come alive with athletes looking for a coveted spot at the European selection event in Augsburg, Germany in May.
Leading the charge was double Olympian (4th place in Beijing) and Salmon Leap paddler Eoin Rheinisch looking to retain his spot on the team with Ciaran Heurteau quickly coming through the ranks as an extreamly talented international paddler close on his heels.
With the men's selection taking the headlines with experience and technique a important a fitness and strength the races were fast and technical.
One weekend 3 races - top placing take the team spots for Olympic selection.
The first race of the weekend kicked off starting with senior men running through women's, u23 and Junior a fast start saw Eoin take 2 clear runs with Ciaran faster but dropping valuable seconds with an unfortunate touch. Fighting for 3rd place Patrick Hynes another experienced paddler was being pushed hard by yougster Samual Curtis (18) of Wild Water Kayak Club. With Sam taking the 3rd spot in the first race leaving Paddy trailing in 4th.
The second race saw a reversal of placings with no practice time the athletes could only study the course from the bank, this time a single run meant they had to make it count this time Ciaran took 1st, Eoin 2nd, Patrick 3rd and Sam 4th
In the women's the places were hotly contested with Hannah Craig, Helen Barnes and Aisling Conlan all fighting for the 3 available spots. All keen to take the title as Irish number one.
In the junior ranks Cade Ryan was looking smooth dropping time overcooking a tough downstream but a master class if technical paddling really showed the gathering crowds he's a telent for the future.
As the water levels dropped on a cool Saturday evening the athletes knew it would all come down to Sundays 3rd race with everyone still well in the mix.
Sunday morning saw a glorious day with a larger release of water by the ESB tidying up a few shallow lines and really creating a fantastic third day of racing. With the final selection race up first followed by the Irish open event 47 competitors eagerly awaited the start.
Once again senior men led the proceeding showing the crowd why he is Irish number one Eoin Rheinisch took the win with a fast run followed closely by Ciaran Heurteau. Both Eoin and Ciaran travel the world competing and training as full time athletes, both an absolute pleasure to watch and really nice guys always on hand to support the developing juniors a real credit to the sport.
The battle for third place really came down to the wire with paddy taking unfortunate touches and Sam having an unusually bad run of form, the times were close but the young Wild Water youngster just nipped in front of Patrick to take the 3rd spot and a place at the Olympic qualifiers in May.
In the women's race the three lined up knowing they each had to paddle to their best to guarentee themselves the top spots with the pressure off the European qualifiers all three would be representing. The races were fast with the women showing spirit and skill to negotiate the tight course.
With the runs results in, saw Hannah Craig in pole position and Helen Barnes in 2nd place leaving Aisling in third.
Once the selection races were finished it was time for the open event this was the fun event with competitors ranging from Irish team paddlers of other disciplines to those long retired but still out to have a go. With the aim to get through as many gates as possible the runs were counted as opposed to tenghths of a second as in the selection in the less serious open event we were discussing minutes. With Niall Power taking the much converted win followed by Adrian Durrant in second and Bernard Walsh 3rd in the men's event. The women's event was won by Mairead Barnwell of Rockhoppers kayak club.
The selection event was an opportunity to see Ireland's top paddlers back on home turf with many spending the majority of the year competing and training as full time athletes. We wish all our athletes every success in the European Olympic Qualifier in May and hope to see them representing Ireland at the London Olympic Games 2012.

Achill island for some sea kayaking

When the weather plays in our favour Ireland's natural resources can rival that of anywhere in the world! Last weekend I hit up Achill island for some scenic sea kayaking and the weather gods were good to us! Here's a little bit of info of the route that we took if your looking for some sea paddling out west!

Start point: Keam beach (pictured above).
From here you have two options, for a shorter journey you could paddle from the very scenic keam beach past Dooagh while taking in a few islands to finish in Purteen harbour or Keel beach. This is about an 8km or 4nm journey finishing on a beach which nearly always has some surf for a little play.

Alternatively you can head past Keel beach and take in the epic Minaun cliffs which tower up to a height of about 400mts. The total for the journey then is about 18k. Bear in mind however that once you pass Keel beach there is nowhere to land if there is any swell until you reach Dooega beach!

Luckily last weekend the weather was blowing from a north/ north-easterly direction so we had very little wind to contend with on the south of the island. There also happened to next to 0 swell which is very unusual for Achill. As you can imagine this trip is particularly exposed during westerly/ south-westerly weather (the most prominent wind direction).

During the trip I also got the chance to demo the new H2O crystal touring paddle. The paddle I demoed was on a cranked carbon shaft 220cm long. Initially the paddle looks pretty flash and it doesn't disappoint. The only thing I was suprised at was
the amount of flex in the blade. However once I tried the paddle on the water I didn't find this to be a problem. The stiffness of the shaft with the small amount of flex in the blade are a good combination.

I found the paddle to give a good amount of power for the blade size and due to the low angle of the blade you shouldn't tire too easily on longer trips. Also on the paddle is an easily adjustable centre joint with 15deg increments.
Overall I would recommend the paddle for recreational sea kayakers as I believe the blades would have a long life span and I found them quite easy to just pick up and go!

Curragower Rodeo 2012

Alright, so last weekend we had the Curragower event of the Irish Freestyle league Happened down In limerick. The competition was on the Sunday but myself and the lads decided to head down early Saturday to get some cheeky training in ;)
Saturday turned out to be pretty good with Orky and Dave turning up too. The level was a bit lower than competition but we were still able to throw whatever moves we had.
It came to Sunday and we had stayed over in limerick. We woke up around 11 and had a whopper fry.
Good way to start the day???

We Got to the wave at around half 11 and the wave still hadnt fully formed but registration and briefing was well on its way.

Great performance put on by everyone across the day. I came third just beaten by Shane little by 35 points and Billy Brett the man of the day slaughtering everyone with a whopping 835 points. Fair play man. Thank for to everyone involved in organising it and Im looking forward to the next event Ill leave you now with a short video I made of the day.

GMIT Intervarsity's 2012

So the time of year was upon us, where every paddling student in the country descends on one poor helpless town to run riot paddle hard and generally drink the place dry.

This year GMIT were hosting the event in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

The Friday saw the first event in a cold Crossmolina the coaches travelled pulling trailers laden with boats of all colours and sizes, as the Students arrived the polo comp kicked off with an exciting first round of games seeing a brave trinity narrowly miss out to a strong Limerick team, The 2 pre tournament favourites MUCK (Maynooth) and the GMIT had an opening round exchange with GMIT proving strongest taking the convincing win,DSC02998

As the event continued so did the weather with drizzle and rain to contend with a wicked side wind flying across the pitch, One highlight was to see Carlow or ORK IT as its more affectionally known line up with a single man against a full team of 5. On his own Orky battled hard through tiredness and pain scoring 2 goals on his was to a loss knocking him out of the competition.DSC03086

DCU took the wildcard place into the Semi-finals against an improving UCD having dispatched there local rivals they were pushed into a tense final against favourites GMIT

After a strong 1st half DCU were holding out at 0-0 and GMIT just couldn't find the net hitting all sides of the goal until finally into the 2nd half Kevin Pierce stepped up to finally score the first goal from then on it was one way traffic to leave GMIT convincing winners for the 2nd year running.DSC03179

Friday Night the crowds headed to a busy Castlebar for celebration and socialising before the following days events.

Saturday started bright and early with a tough team white water race claiming many swims and a lot of pride after the white water the teams headed south to Tuam Co, Galway for the freestyle event.

The freestyle event took the format of team jam sessions DSC03312with the top 8 moves of each paddler combined to create a team score, with many current and ex Irish team paddlers in attendance the field was stacked with talent, smooth cartwheels from Colin Wong and fast helix’s of Barry Loughnane saw some huge scores. The point of having a team event meant it was up to the whole team to perform for their combined total with ORK IT again a single paddler making it difficult to accumulate any real points.

A super strong University of Limerick team took the win with a great display working through the scoreDSC03351 sheet. In second was NUIG led by Barry and Andrew really working the score sheet and in third with an improving performance was DCU showing it could have been anyone's game.DSC03400DSC03405DSC03427DSC03399

The Evening saw the masses return the the Royal Theatre in Castlebar for a night of Soul with a James Brown tribute band in the house providing the music of the night.DSC03436

A tired Sunday morning arrived with the long distance races to be held in Castlebar with a lack of rescue meant the race was cut from a healthy 8km to a short sprint over 2km

DSC03484DSC03521DSC03523DSC03527

the K1 was first with a fast race led start to finish by Tom Brennan from Trinity followed closely in second place by Liam Banks of UCD next off was the high performance class again led by Canoeing Ireland athlete Neil Fleming taking a comfortable win with Colin Wong in second place. In the women's class Laura Griffin took the win with Aisling Griffin in second place.

Kokatat switch, good idea!

The Rogue
My new Favourite piece of gear!so so dry and comfortable and with tight and snug waist clasps keeps the water out of my boat to .What more could you ask for ..the gore tex material is tough and reliable with some extra gore tex layers in the places we need them simply put its awesome.
The Ronin PFD
At first glance the ronin doesnt look like much but its simple and perfect for freestyle with easy front pockets that are perfect for all those bits and pieces .It gives you an awful lot of freedom of movement for freestyle and creeking when those little strokes count. But more importantly it will keep you afloat!
Tempest dry pants
kokatat really got these right they are perfect for what ever kind of paddling you do .They are so dry and comfortable.Just like the rogue they feature very dry waist clasps which make the rogue and pants perfect together. To keep the socks in the best of order and old pair of socks or decent boots.

I-CANOE has the cheapest prices in the World???

Ok, so that sounds like an incredible and possibly far fetched headline.  But read on to find out if it is true…

When comparing prices, the are a lot of variables to be taken into consideration: shipping, duties, taxes, handling fees, etc…

For this experiment, we are going to compare NET prices (e.g. the selling price excluding tax/VAT) and in Euro.  All pricing in I-CANOE includes duty which varies between 3 – 16% AND VAT at 23% whereas on other websites, in the USA for example, the selling prices exclude any taxes which are added on to the final order at checkout depending on which State you reside in – no taxes are added for export.  What’s VAT?  VAT stands for Value Added Tax.  It sounds like something good that you get included free with your purchase but in reality its a sneaky little tax that is included in everything you buy within the EU.  The seller collects this tax on behalf of the government and then returns the tax to the government at regular intervals throughout the year.

For comparing different currencies, we will be using the following exchange rates (correct Jan 2012):

$1.30 US Dollar = 1 Euro

£0.80 UK Pounds = 1 Euro

We will ignore all shipping costs, duties, etc… to make things a little easier.

First up, the Kokatat Gore Tex Meridian Drysuit:

gore_meridian_gme_drysuit33_small

US RRP $999 = 769 Euro

I-CANOE Price 1000 Euro, less web discount (10%) = 900 Euro, less VAT = 732 Euro!!

If you were to order this suit from the US, apart from delivery costs, you would also be liable for duty (approx 10%) and VAT (23%) so the suit could easily end up costing 1040 Euro (assuming shipping is free).

Secondly, let’s look at a Werner Powerhouse, Straight Glass:

Werner Powerhouse

US RRP $250 = 192 Euro

UK RRP £199 = 202 Euro (excluding UK VAT at 20%)

I-CANOE Price 250 Euro, less web discount (10%) = 225 Euro, less VAT = 183 Euro!!

If you were to order this paddle from the US, apart from delivery costs, you would also be liable for duty (approx 6%) and VAT (23%) so the paddle could easily end up costing 250 Euro (assuming shipping is free).

Lastly, let’s try a Whitewater Kayak, the NEW 2012 Jackson Fun Runner:

fun-runner-top

US RRP $1149 = 884 Euro

UK RRP £899 = 936 Euro (excluding UK VAT at 20%)

I-CANOE Price 1100 Euro, less web discount (10%) = 990 Euro, less VAT = 805 Euro!!

If you were to order this kayak from the US, the shipping costs would be HORRENDOUS, and we wouldn’t advise it.

So there you have it.  It’s not exactly scientific and of course different shops will have special offers and yes you might even get away without paying all those nasty taxes and duties but we have illustrated how I-CANOE offers you some of the best prices in the World… along with the best aftersales backup and support in the Universe!

Design My Van Competition

photo 1photo 2photo 3

So over the Christmas Holidays, we had to say good-bye to the trusty I-CANOE Transit Van.

After 8 loyal years of service, it was time to put the old girl into retirement.

photo 2photo 1photo 3photo 4

So last week we took delivery of a new(er) Mercedes Sprinter.  It’s longer, faster and hopefully as reliable as the old van but it’s looking a little plain at the moment.

That’s why we are looking for YOU to help design our new van.

So get your thinking caps on, get the creative juices flowing and come up with a cracking design to be in with a chance to win a 200 euro voucher to spend on any Go Pro or Fuji Camera (subject to availability)!

There are no specific design criteria: it may be a mix of text and images.  The most important thing is that it a memorable design that inspires anyone who sees it to start or continue paddling!

Deadline is 31st January 2012 so get cracking now.  Send your designs, in jpeg format to the normal email address (shop@i-canoe.com) or post up on our facebook page.

Judges decision is final.  Any designs featuring photographic imagery should own the rights to those images.  By entering this competition you agree to give all copyright to I-CANOE to re-use the design as we choose.
