Italy – Day 6

  • Last day in Italy.
  • The less rusty you get the more sore you become… so it was time for some experimental video at the top drop on the Egua.  This involved strapping my normal helmet, which had my normal headcam strapped to it, all onto the top of my normal paddle.
  • The concept worked a treat but I need to get more practise using it.  It’s definitely the most straight-forward way to make an on-the-fly boom cam and give you a 6ft reach to get those floaty tracking shots.
  • So long Italy, see you next year!

Italy – Day 5

  • Middle Sesia – from Campertogno to Scopello

Piode Waterfall

  • Jumped on at the Campsite in Campertogno and cruised gingerly down to the portage at Quare.  Amazing how much volume there is in this section, some big wave trains and holes.  Feels almost like Austria.
  • Took out river right at Quare to avoid syphon alley.
  • Put in a couple of hundred metres below and we were at the take out in Piode in no time – to inspect the Falls.

Colm on lead in to Piode

  • After watching one of the English lads run it we decided it was relatively straight-forward although the main flow was running deep into the slot and was very aerated.
  • Eoin ran first.  I was trying to watch from upstream by my boat.  He dropped over the lip, hard left on the right hand channel as planned, and then seemed to take an eternity for the thumbs up to come from the guys on the bridge.
  • Thumbs up, a few deep breathes and off I went…

  • After landing in the pit at the base of the falls, I hadn’t a clue where I was – still at the base of the drop or washing through.
  • After setting up for a roll and not getting any purchase in the aerated water, I suddenly realised I had much less air in my lungs than anticipated.
  • Before I knew it my legs had exited the cockpit and the rest of my body soon followed.
  • I then realised where I was – past the bridge but heading for a large boulder in the centre of the river and then two seams running diagonally off of it.
  • This lead to some serious downtime and it was only afterwards, on playing back the video that I realised a) a throwbag landed just overhead and, b) just how long the downtime actually was.
  • Before long I washed up on shore on the right-hand bank and started the walk of shame back to the van.
